Central Park Zoo

The Central Park Zoo is a 6.5-acre zoo located at the southeast corner of Central Park in New York City. It is part of an integrated system managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society, and its precursor opened in 1864 as the first public zoo in New York. The present facility debuted on December 2, 1934, built with Civil Works Administration and Works Progress Administration funding, and underwent a complete $35 million renovation from 1983 to 1988, replacing cages with naturalistic environments. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring a variety of animals in settings designed to mimic their natural habitats. The Children's Zoo, opened in 1960, offers interactive experiences for younger guests. The Wildlife Conservation Society also provides children's educational programs, engages in endangered species restoration, and runs community volunteer initiatives, making the zoo both an entertaining and educational destination.
