Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art in Midtown Manhattan holds over 200,000 works from the late 19th century to today, including architecture, design, painting, sculpture, photography, film, and electronic media. Founded in 1929 by three women, it opened soon after the Wall Street Crash. Its current building on West 53rd Street opened in 1939, and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden was redesigned by Philip Johnson in 1953. Visitors can view seminal modern art, from European modernists to works by underrepresented groups added in recent decades. The museum stages major exhibitions, provides a sculpture garden, and houses a research library with 300,000 books and archives. Notable expansions and a merger with P.S.1 have enhanced its offerings. Its labor union, founded in 1971, was a first in the US.
