Stonewall Inn

The Stonewall Inn is a historic gay bar at 53 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village. It was the site of the 1969 Stonewall riots, which sparked the gay liberation movement and modern fight for LGBTQ rights. Originally opened as a private club in 1967 by mafiosos, the bar was frequently raided despite bribes. After the riots, it closed and reopened in 1990, later acquired by new owners in 2007. The buildings are unadorned brick and stucco. Visitors can explore a working tavern that is a symbol of LGBTQ rights and a tourist attraction. The bar hosts events and performances, and its owners run an LGBTQ advocacy organization. The site is a National Historic Landmark and part of the Stonewall National Monument, the first U.S. National Monument dedicated to the LGBTQ rights movement. A visitor center is located at 51 Christopher Street.
