His Majesty's Theatre, London

His Majesty's Theatre is a Grade II listed West End theatre in London's Haymarket. Designed by Charles J. Phipps and opened in 1897, it was built for actor-manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree, who founded the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art here. The theatre's wide stage, added after the First World War, makes it ideal for large-scale musicals, and it has hosted record-setting runs including Chu Chin Chow and Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. Visitors today can enjoy The Phantom of the Opera, which has been playing at His Majesty's since 1986, except during the COVID-19 pandemic closures. The theatre's rich history also includes premieres by playwrights such as Bernard Shaw and Noël Coward, and its name changes with the monarch's gender—reverting to His Majesty's upon the accession of Charles III in 2023. With 1,216 seats and elegant Victorian architecture, it offers a classic West End experience.
