Simpson's-in-the-Strand

Simpson's-in-the-Strand is a traditional English restaurant that opened in 1828 as a smoking room and coffee house. It is part of the Savoy Buildings alongside the Savoy Hotel. By the 1850s it had gained a dual reputation for its classic English food, especially roast meats, and for being the most important chess venue in 19th-century Britain. Chess ended when the Savoy group bought the restaurant, but its culinary fame endured. After a closure due to the pandemic, it reopened in 2026 under restaurateur Jeremy King. Visitors come to enjoy a celebrated dining experience in a historic setting, sampling time-honoured English dishes. The restaurant is known for its roasted meats and has been called "a restful temple of food" by P. G. Wodehouse. Its location on the Strand adds to its appeal, and the connection to the Savoy hotel offers a sense of London heritage.
