First Congregational Church of Los Angeles

First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, founded in 1867, is the city’s oldest continuous Protestant congregation. The current building, completed in 1932, is an English Gothic Revival concrete structure reinforced with over 500 tons of steel and supported by 150 caissons reaching up to 45 feet into bedrock. The design was created by Los Angeles architects James Edward Allison and David Clark Allison. Visitors can admire the church’s dominant 157-foot tower, originally capped by four three-ton pinnacles that were damaged in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. The replicas now stand at the driveway entrances. The church is also home to the world’s second-largest church organ. In 2002 it was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
