Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign is a historic American landmark and cultural icon perched on Mount Lee above Beachwood Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains. Originally erected in 1923 as a temporary real estate advertisement reading HOLLYWOODLAND, the sign was left up due to its popularity. The last four letters were removed in 1949, and the entire structure was replaced in 1978 with more durable 45-foot-tall steel letters set in concrete footings. Visitors come to see one of the most recognizable symbols of Los Angeles, frequently featured in film and television establishing shots. The sign offers excellent photo opportunities from various vantage points along nearby hiking trails and public lookout areas. The landmark is promoted and preserved by the Hollywood Sign Trust, a nonprofit organization that maintains its iconic appearance and celebrates milestone anniversaries.
