Mermaid

Mermaid (also called The Mermaid) is a whimsical outdoor sculpture by Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, created in 1979. It stands at the Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater and is made from concrete, steel, polyurethane, enamel, palm tree, and water. Measuring about 21 feet tall and 24 feet wide, it was Lichtenstein's first public art commission, according to some accounts, and it is the second piece of public art installed in Miami Beach. Visitors can see this vibrant, cartoonish mermaid surrounded by water and a palm tree, a lively example of Lichtenstein's signature style. The sculpture is viewable from the street and plaza, making it a fun photo stop and a piece of Miami Beach's cultural history. It has been restored several times, and the adjacent theater has also undergone renovations and name changes over the decades.
