Torch of Friendship

The Torch of Friendship is a monument on Biscayne Boulevard at the northwest corner of Bayfront Park in downtown Miami. Built in 1960, it originally stood as a symbolic passageway for immigrants arriving from Latin America and the Caribbean. Its gas-fed flame was designed to be a welcoming beacon for all new and long-standing immigrants to the nation. In 1964, the monument was re-dedicated to President John F. Kennedy. Visitors can see this historic public artwork while strolling through Bayfront Park. The monument offers a photo opportunity and a chance to reflect on Miami’s role as a gateway for diverse cultures. The continuously burning flame makes it a striking landmark both day and night, and its central location makes it easy to include on a walking tour of downtown attractions.
