The Berghoff

The Berghoff is a historic restaurant located at 17 West Adams Street in the Chicago Loop, opened in 1898 by Herman Joseph Berghoff. It began as a saloon but during Prohibition, it gained fame for its German cuisine, including sauerbraten, wiener schnitzel, creamed spinach, and apple strudel. The waiters were known for their professional service with formal cloth aprons and exceptional memory, and the restaurant used a token system for food purchases. For much of its history, it had a men-only bar until 1969 when members of the National Organization for Women, including Gloria Steinem, demanded and received service there. Visitors can experience this Chicago landmark's enduring tradition of German-American food and its historic ambiance. The restaurant has been recognized with a James Beard Foundation Award in the 'America's Classics' category. The professional waitstaff and unique token system add to the charm. The history of women breaking the bar's gender barrier is also a notable part of its story.
