Orpheum Theatre

The Orpheum Theatre, originally the Pantages Theatre, stands in San Francisco's Civic Center district at 1192 Market Street. Designed by architect B. Marcus Priteca for theater-circuit owner Alexander Pantages, it opened in 1926. The interior features a vaulted ceiling, while the facade is Plateresque (Late Spanish Gothic) Revival. Seating 2,197 patrons, the theatre is a locally designated San Francisco landmark. After a 1970s renovation, a $20 million makeover completed in 1998 made the Orpheum more suitable for Broadway shows. Today it hosts major touring productions and is co-owned with the Golden Gate Theatre by BroadwaySF. Visitors come to enjoy live Broadway performances in an architecturally stunning and historically significant venue.
