Presidio of San Francisco

The Presidio is a former U.S. Army post on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, now a park within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Originally fortified by New Spain in 1776, it later passed to Mexico and then the United States, serving as a military installation for 219 years until it was transferred to the National Park Service in 1994. Today, the Presidio is managed by the Presidio Trust and the National Park Service, with a mandate to be financially self-sufficient. Visitors come to explore its wooded areas, hills, and scenic vistas overlooking the Golden Gate, the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. The park offers a mix of public and commercial use, with trails, historic buildings, and viewpoints that make it a popular destination for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
