Theatre Rhinoceros

Theatre Rhinoceros is a non-profit theater company in San Francisco dedicated to producing plays by and about gay and lesbian people. Founded in spring 1977 by Lanny Baugniet and Allan B. Estes, Jr., its name comes from the lavender rhinoceros symbol popularized by the Boston gay community in the mid-1970s. The company claims to be the world's longest-running professional queer theater. Visitors can attend performances that showcase queer stories and perspectives. Theatre Rhinoceros was the first gay theater company to employ actors under a professional seasonal agreement, and it has been recognized by the California State Assembly on its twenty-fifth anniversary and at the remembrance of assassinated San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk. The theater offers a unique cultural experience centered on LGBTQ+ voices.
