United Nations Plaza

United Nations Plaza is a 2.6-acre public space in San Francisco's Civic Center, built on the former alignments of Fulton and Leavenworth Streets. Designed by a joint venture including Lawrence Halprin, John Carl Warnecke, and Mario Ciampi, the plaza features a large sunken fountain by Halprin. Dedicated in 1975, it commemorates the signing of the United Nations Charter in San Francisco in 1945. Visitors can enjoy the open plaza and its central fountain, and walk east to City Hall via the connected Fulton Mall and Civic Center Plaza. The plaza also has a direct entrance to the Civic Center/UN Plaza BART and Muni Metro station, making it easy to reach. Renovations in 1995 and 2005, plus redesign proposals in 2018, show ongoing care for this historic space.
